Greetings everyone! I am the newest, freshest, greenest Associate Producer on Broadway and you now have exclusive access to my daily musings! Welcome, this will be a spectacular journey for all of us.
Full disclosure; I am just your average ambitious and energetic college grad trying to carve her mark into the NYC theater scene. I am a proud graduate of the University of Florida (Go Gators!). I started producing for Gen Y Productions, an Orlando-based theater company, less than a year ago. Not to mention, I have been an active reader of The Producer’s Perspective since I entered this mysterious new profession. So here I am, under the tutelage of Ken Davenport, continuing Hunter Chancellor’s blogging and producorial (yup, I make up words) legacy. Make no mistake, this is Broadway folks, and I have big shoes to fill.
Not only is this a fantastic professional opportunity, but I can’t think of a more perfect production to be joining as a young producer.
I was first exposed to Spring Awakening on my first date with my (now) husband, Aaron. He played the cast album in his dorm room (likely a test of my theater taste and prowess) and I was entranced. This musical was unlike anything I had ever heard before. It was powerful, rebellious, and shocking. I fell in love.
This revival will be just as provocative as the original. I have no doubt. AND, most importantly, it was conceived by the brilliant artistic team at Deaf West Theatre. You’ve probably heard the news. This is a cast of mixed deaf and hearing actors, pouring their souls onto the stage, in a musical written about the struggles of young people who are not truly heard by anyone around them. There is no better time or place for theater of this nature. It is like nothing you have ever experienced before.
For all those reasons, I am honored to be a part of this process. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought it possible to be here. Thank you all for joining me on this thrilling, challenging new course. In upcoming posts I’ll be sharing more about my role of “associate producer,” my explorations of American Sign Language (ASL), and exclusive updates and announcements.
Until next time!
28 days until the first preview of Spring Awakening!
